KUNDSA Makes History: A Grand Launch and a New Era for Kisii University Nutrition & Dietetics Students
Friday, 21st March 2025, will forever remain a landmark day in the history of the Kisii University Nutrition and Dietetics Students association (KUNDSA). This long-awaited event marked not only the official launch of KUNDSA but also an enriching day of mentorship, motivation, and networking that left a lasting impression on all participants.
A Day of Purpose: From AGM to Mentorship and Inspiration
The day commenced with KUNDSA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), setting the stage for an eventful program. This was followed by a powerful mentorship session led by distinguished Kisii University staff. Representing the Students Affairs Department, Mr. Enock Mokua delivered remarks on behalf of Dr. Gladys Osoro (Dean of Students). The School of Health Sciences was ably represented by Dr. Raymond Oigara (Dean, School of Health Sciences), who delivered an insightful keynote address, alongside Dr. Samuel Mongare, Ms. Julian Okemwa, and Ms. Charity Okemwa.
The mentorship session reached greater heights with the inspiring contributions of KUNDSA’s esteemed alumni. Mr. Patrick Martin Malusi, a First-Class Honours graduate and Nutrition Officer at Mama Margaret
Kenyatta Hospital, shared his journey of academic excellence and professional success. Ms. Ann Kerubo, Nutritionist In-Charge of Oasis Hospitals (Oasis Doctors Plaza-Kisii) and a DAAD Scholar at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, inspired students with her career trajectory and dedication to the profession. The session was concluded with an enlightening presentation by Mr. Joshua Ogeto, a researcher and product development expert at Kenya Industrial Research & Development Institute (KIRDI), Kisii, who provided insights into innovation and opportunities in the nutrition sector.
Celebrating Leadership, Achievements, and Growth
Following the mentorship session, KUNDSA transitioned to a moment of transformation and celebration. The event featured the swearing-in of the new KUNDSA leadership, led by President Musa Odongo, and a heartfelt farewell to the outgoing 4th-year students, who were honored with certificates of appreciation.
The official launch of KUNDSA was undoubtedly the highlight of the day. This momentous occasion was marked by the unveiling of KUNDSA’s roll-up banner, branded T-shirts, the KUNDSA Membership Loyalty Pledge, and a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony. Guests and
exemplary members were presented with special tokens of appreciation, underscoring KUNDSA’s culture of gratitude and recognition.
A Proud Legacy and a Promising Future
According to Patron KUNDSA, Mutua Alex, the association holds a special place in his heart, having made remarkable progress in less than a year since its inception. Notable achievements include:
•Conducting health screenings, nutrition assessments, and counseling programs.
•Participating in two national scientific conferences (KENDSA 2024 & 2025).
•Organizing sports tournaments and mountain hikes for wellness and team-building.
•Hosting Continuous Nutrition Education (CNE) webinars to advance knowledge and professional growth.
These milestones were eloquently highlighted in the presentation by Mr. Peter Njenga, the founding and outgoing president, whose leadership has laid a strong foundation for the association’s future.
Looking ahead, Patron Mutua Alex expressed confidence in the new leadership team, stating that, under President Musa Odongo, KUNDSA is poised to expand partnerships, engage more stakeholders, and become a key player in national and international health and nutrition initiatives.
